Mendoza, Argentina

With the spectacular Andes backdrop, dozens of microclimates and a reputation for world-class winemaking, Mendoza produces more wine than all of Australia.

Located at the base of the Andes Mountains, this is the most important wine region in Argentina, producing 80% of the country's grapes. The hot, dry climate is moderated by high altitude and the big termal amplitude that occurs in this region, which makes the grapes to mature slowly providing optimal character on their wines. The main grape is Malbec, but production of Cabernet Sauvignon, Bonarda, Syrah & Chardonnay among others are also common.

Mendoza has 2 main wine regions:

Lujan de Cuyo: Recognised as the first appellation in Argentina in 1993 and home to the majority of vineyards in Mendoza, with some vines planted more than 100 years ago. Established and consistent. Alluvial mixture of clay, loam and stone soils which produces more fruit-forward, wines with great concentration.

Valle de Uco: The premier wine growing region in Mendoza, home to up-and-coming producers. The altitude is highest here, meaning cooler temperatures/longer ripening periods, and vineyards receiving natural irrigation from the Andes. Poor stone soils producing wines with higher acidity, great structure and superb complexity.
